FOREVER GREEN Newsletter March Edition

Welcome to the March 2023 issue of our sustainability newsletter, Forever Green!

Daylight Saving Time is now upon us in most areas of North America and throughout the world.  There have been many studies and discussions on the impact of daylight saving time on the environment – both positive and negative – with some experts suggesting that the increase in daylight reduces the demand for electrical use such as lighting, while others consider offsets in heating and cooling to be a wash.

One thing seems to be universal – the “Spring Forward” change of the clocks brings longer days and shorter nights as many of us look forward to warmer weather ahead and the outdoor activities that increased daylight brings.

In other news, AI seems to everywhere! Artificial Intelligence certainly is not new, but with the recent explosion of chatbot applications such as ChatGPT and Microsoft’s new Bing AI chatbot, the use cases seem endless.

Here are just some of the ways that T5 Data Centers, as well as our customer communities, are exploring how to leverage the power of AI to support an ongoing commitment to sustainability:

  • Energy efficiency optimization: AI can analyze data center energy usage patterns and identify opportunities for optimization by predicting peak energy usage times and adjusting cooling and heating systems accordingly to reduce energy waste.
  • Predictive maintenance: AI can monitor data center equipment and identify potential issues before they cause downtime or energy waste. By predicting equipment failure and scheduling maintenance, energy waste and emissions from replacement parts can be reduced.
  • Renewable energy integration: AI can help data centers integrate renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, into their energy mix. By analyzing energy demand patterns and available renewable energy supply, AI can optimize renewable energy usage to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Waste reduction: AI can help data centers identify areas where waste can be reduced, such as inefficient cooling systems, outdated equipment, and unnecessary lighting. By optimizing processes and identifying areas for improvement, waste can be reduced and sustainability can be increased.
  • Carbon footprint reduction: AI can help data centers track their carbon footprint and identify ways to reduce it. By analyzing energy usage patterns, identifying opportunities for renewable energy integration, and optimizing processes, data centers can reduce their carbon emissions and support sustainability efforts.
  • Supply Chain Optimization: AI can be used to optimize supply chains and reduce waste. Algorithms can optimize packaging and reduce the amount of waste generated by operations.
  • Climate Modeling: AI can be used to develop climate models that can help predict the impact of climate change and support efforts to mitigate its effects.

As this technology advances, one thing is clear – AI could be a powerful tool in tracking carbon outputs and provide other valuable insights for increased efficiencies which will drive a more sustainable future.
