Transforming Legacy Infrastructure: T5 Construction Wins Brownfield Project of the Year

Defined by passion and perseverance in pursuit of long-term goals, grit is what carries teams through complexity, uncertainty, and the kind of challenges that don’t have easy answers. This year’s DCS Brownfield Project of the Year award is a reflection of exactly that.

We’re proud to announce that T5 Construction has been recognized with the 2026 DCS Awards Brownfield Project of the Year for one of the most ambitious and demanding projects in our history: the transformation of a former cryptocurrency mining operation in Texas into a high-performance, AI-ready data center campus for a major hyperscale customer.

But this award is about more than the project itself – it’s about the people who made it possible.

This team was asked to do something exceptionally difficult. To take a constrained, legacy site never designed for modern AI infrastructure and turn it into a scalable, high-density environment—fast.

No ideal conditions. No extra time. Just a mission-critical challenge and a team willing to solve it.

As demand for AI-ready capacity accelerates and greenfield development becomes more constrained by land, power, permitting, and cost, the industry is being forced to think differently. This project is proof that with the right expertise, legacy infrastructure can become a strategic advantage.

But transformation at this scale is never straightforward.

The site presented real obstacles including a limited footprint, existing structures incapable of supporting modern mechanical loads, phased delivery requirements, environmental constraints, and an aggressive delivery timeline that would test even the most seasoned teams.

And the challenges didn’t stop there.

This was a live exercise in problem-solving, adaptability, and relentless execution.

The team implemented a strategy that turned existing low-density structures into high-density AI-ready data halls while simultaneously delivering new facilities elsewhere on the campus. They developed vertical cooling strategies when conventional approaches weren’t feasible. They reinforced existing buildings internally to support new chilled water infrastructure and heavy mechanical systems rather than defaulting to demolition.

Every decision required creativity.

Every milestone required coordination.

Every obstacle required perseverance.

This wasn’t just construction. It was disciplined execution under pressure.

And that pressure was real.

Accelerated timelines. Overlapping scopes. Complex engineering constraints. The expectation to energize portions of the campus while work continued around them. The kind of environment where resilience matters just as much as expertise.

That’s grit.

What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it reflects how T5 works at our best: bringing together construction, operations, engineering, commissioning, and field leadership to solve hard problems without compromising safety, quality, or long-term performance.

This project didn’t succeed because conditions were easy. It succeeded because the team refused to let complexity become an excuse.

To everyone who helped bring this project to life—thank you.

This award belongs to the builders, planners, engineers, operators, field teams, and problem-solvers who showed up every day ready to do hard things well.

That’s the kind of grit that defines T5.

And that’s worth celebrating.
